Coastal Paradises


Kenya’s coastline is 536 km of turquoise paradise with 700+ years of Swahili, Arab, Portuguese, and Indian history layered in.

Kenya’s 500+ km Indian Ocean coastline rivals the Maldives or Zanzibar but with richer history and easier access.

Diani Beach & South Coast (1 hr south of Mombasa)

Arguably Africa’s most beautiful beach (multiple World Travel Awards winner). Think 25 km of powdery white sand, turquoise lagoon, swaying palms, and kitesurfing heaven. Perfect for water sports, dolphin spotting, or simply hammock-lazing with fresh seafood.

Think Kitesurfing capital, dolphin safaris (non-hunting), bioluminescent night swims, and coral caves for dinner sunset dhow sails (May–Oct), and romantic dinners in coral caves (Ali Barbour’s).

How to access: Fly into Mombasa or take the SGR train + shuttle. SGR to Mombasa + taxi/shuttle (KSh 3,000) or direct flight to Ukunda. Stay at luxury eco-resorts or boutique villas like Diani Reef (from $120); Luxury Sands at Nomad or eco-villas ($350+).
Best time: Dec–Mar & Jul–Oct.
Nov–Apr (dry & sunny).

Watamu & Malindi (2 hrs north of Mombasa)

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with Kenya’s best snorkeling and the mysterious Gedi Ruins (abandoned 12th–17th century Swahili city swallowed by jungle think Indiana Jones vibes).

New add: Mida Creek mangrove boardwalk at sunset + Arabuko-Sokoke Forest butterfly walks.

Activities: Snorkel with turtles (KSh 4,500), kayak mangroves, visit Marafa Depression (“Hell’s Kitchen” – rainbow-colored canyon that glows at sunset).

Mountains & Epic Landscapes – Hiking,  & Adrenaline

Mount Kenya (Africa’s 2nd Highest Peak)
Dramatic Afro-alpine scenery, glaciers, giant lobelias, and summits (Batian 5,199 m). Choose Point Lenana for non-technical trekking (4–6 days) or base hikes/lodge stays.
Why blog-worthy: Epic sunrise photos above the clouds, cultural Kikuyu legends, and luxury lodges like Fairmont Mount Kenya.
It is a 3–4 hrs drive from Nairobi. 
Best to visit during dry seasons: Jan–Feb or July–Sept

One of Africa’s few parks where you can cycle or hike freely among dramatic gorges, cliffs, hot springs, and geothermal wonders (think mini-Grand Canyon).
Perfect for: Adventure bloggers rent bikes, explore Fischer’s Tower, or do rock climbing. Combine with Lake Naivasha boat rides (hippos optional highlight).

Aberdares and chyullu hills

Waterfalls, sky forests, lava caves, and Kilimanjaro views (horse riding/mountain biking options).

Cultural & Historical Deep Dives
Koobi Fora (Lake Turkana) → Cradle of humankind fossils, vast alkaline lake, and otherworldly desert landscapes (fly-in or 4×4 adventure).

Narok Town → Authentic Maasai/Kalenjin culture away from tourist villages, plus the local museum.
