 ‎  When people think about tourism in Kenya, the first images that come to mind are the Maasai Mara, elephants, lions, and beautiful landscapes. Tourism is, however, changing from what we traditionally know it to be. The focus is now on how the places people visit are managed. Are animals kept in cages, or are they free? Are the animals allowed to exist in their natural habitats? Are buildings built in their habitats? Are they surrounded by noise and destruction? Sustainable tourism is about ensuring that nature, wildlife, and communities are protected and exist in harmony while visitors enjoy these destinations. Kenya has several destinations that represent a different approach to tourism.  These places show that wildlife does not need to be controlled or turned into entertainment for people to appreciate it. The Role of Culture in Attracting Tourists:  Preservation or Commodification? Commodification refers to the process of turning cultural traditions, symbols, or practices into products or experiences that can be marketed and consumed by tourists. For example, a traditional dance, craft, or ceremony may become a tourist attraction. Preservation refers to protecting and maintaining cultural traditions so they continue to exist and remain meaningful to the community.
